It’s cold outside, and this means kids are playing more inside the house than out in the snow. Being stuck at home all day can be challenging for children because boredom can set in quickly. When you do the same thing repeatedly, it becomes boring. Kids like new and exciting things that challenge their imagination and their minds. During the winter, my niece and nephew enjoy new adventures and activities. I want to share some ideas that can help your little ones this winter.
Keeping Kids Engaged Indoors This Winter
Build a Fort: This is always a favorite among the little ones, mainly when they help set it up. Use blankets, pillows, chairs, and whatever else you need to construct a fantastic fort. Add holiday lights for an extra touch of magic.
Crafts: get paints, crayons, markers, paper, glitter, and craft sticks. Encourage holiday prompts, such as drawing a winter scene or making homemade greeting cards, to give to your family. Ex: make a snowman with cotton balls, construction paper, and glue.
Board Games or Puzzles: This is perfect to challenge their little minds. My nephew ( three years old) loves puzzles, and his favorite board game is Candyland.
Reading: get cozy while reading with blankets and pillows. Encourage kids to explore new books.
Cooking/Baking: having your little ones help cook dinner or even make holiday cookies. Allow them to help with pouring or whisking food. This is great to help them follow directions in an orderly fashion.
Dance Parties: put some music on and dance their little hearts away. This is a great way to help them expend a lot of their energy.
Scavenger Hunt: This allows them to look for clues or even their own toys. My niece and nephew love this because they get to have an adventure. We conduct a holiday scavenger hunt with them and allow them to search for specific objects around the house that are associated with the holiday season.
The goal is to spark their imagination and provide opportunities for engagement and excitement by offering a variety of activities that can help with winter boredom and make indoor playtime a fun and memorable experience for everyone.
