Anna Marie Trotman
It’s January and time to think about how the year 2023 is going to unfold. When looking at the top resolutions that are made every year, it’s pretty much about living a healthier lifestyle, whether it’s getting more exercise, releasing a bad habit or going to a more plant based diet, you are in control. We are always at choice, we can choose to be healthy and go at it full tilt, we can choose to be healthy and forget about it 5 days into the new year, or we can find balance. We suggest balance.
Where Do I Start?
Let’s Start with Getting Support
At The Birth Center, Holistic Woman’s Health Care, we take your health seriously. No matter what your age, we encourage you to have a well-woman exam each year.
If you are a patient at The Birth Center and time got away from you in 2022, you will be receiving a reminder to make an appointment for your Well Woman visit. Now is a perfect time to get an appointment on your calendar. Having a well-woman exam once a year is an important way to take care of your reproductive health, your overall health and discuss your health goals. We are also accepting new patients, so call 302-658-2229 to make an appointment.
Our Foundation of Care
You may be surprised to learn that our certified midwives are positioned to meet many of your primary health care needs. During your well-woman exam, your provider checks on your current health and shares important information with you about preventing future medical problems. It’s also an opportunity for you to ask questions you may have about your overall health and wellbeing.
Having a yearly well-woman exam is the best gift you can give yourself each year. It is the foundation of your health care and a great time for you to connect with your provider about your current and long-term health goals. A well-woman exam gives your provider a chance to catch any health problems early, when they are easiest to treat. Here are some important things that happen during your annual visit.
A Physical
We give you a full exam which looks at various factors that can affect your health, including your blood pressure, weight, and heart rate. We listen to your heart and lungs and look for any signs of trouble.
A Gynecological Exam
We check the health of your breasts and reproductive system, including your vaginal and urinary health. Be sure to let us know if you have questions or concerns about pregnancy, menopausal symptoms, menstrual health symptoms such as pain or heavy bleeding, and your sexual health.
If needed, you will receive a Pap test and/or HPV test. These screening tests look for conditions that could eventually lead to cervical cancer.
Birth Control
We answer any questions you may have about birth control. If you need birth control, we discuss your health goals and which method would be best for you.
Peri-menopause and Menopause
There can be a lot of anxiety around getting older along when physical and emotional symptoms can be or are experienced during this change of life. Our providers are here to listen and guide you through this time when such questions come up as, natural vs Hormone Replacement Therapy, sex drive, vaginal dryness and what tests you still need to take. There’s a lot to learn about what happens to your body during menopause, so don’t hesitate to come and discuss your concerns.
Screening Tests
Various types of screening tests can check for conditions such as breast cancer and colon cancer. We let you know whether and when you should have a mammogram, colonoscopy, and other screening tests.
Depending on your age, health history, and family history, we may also recommend other health screening tests for conditions such as diabetes, osteoporosis, and thyroid disease.
